Our Mission & VisionTogether, we can reduce child abuse, help children who have been abused heal and thrive, and prevent other children from becoming victims.
The foundation of CAP-C is a partnership model in which we bring together 40+ organizations involved in different aspects of children’s safety, protection, health and welfare to share best practices, speak in a unified voice, access resources and create an informed community about child abuse and its prevention.
Explore Cap-C OrganizationsCAP-C convenes child welfare agencies across Fort Bend County as one unified group with a common purpose – to align with one voice and advance the understanding of what could have prevented child abuse. Each of these CAP-C member organizations provides services to children and families who have been abused or are at risk of being abused. Many are direct service providers, others are educators or medical professionals and others are subject matter experts. The collaborative meets monthly to share information, coordinate outreach services and build relationships for systemwide change.
CAP-C is anchored in human-centered design which puts real people with lived experience at the center of the development process. CAP-C conducted a research study in 2024 of 72 survivors and stakeholders of survivors who had lived experience with child abuse or neglect. Key findings were: 1) Survivors tried to tell but were not heard. 2) Parents did not believe abuse could happen to their children. 3) Outdated myths about abuse and abuser characteristics are dangerous and inhibit action. 4) System challenges create obstacles for early risk assessment, intervention, and support to families. Findings will inform the development of programming and information for the prevention and early intervention of child abuse. Read the research report.
The CAP-C website is your “go to” source for information, resources, presentations, videos and other tools for professionals and parents to access. Containing over 1600 items and tools and growing through an “open source” approach, users can download these resources for free and utilize them within their organizations and communities.
The first step in child abuse prevention is awareness that child abuse exists in our community. Professionals, children and adults across the community will receive training in prevention, early intervention, and trauma-informed care with the goal of creating an informed community to keep children safe.
A Child Safety Campaign for parents and caregivers, adults and children will provide safety information, tips and actions in a memorable, age-appropriate manner. The campaign will incorporate social media, short-format video, traditional media, and print. Pilot locations include schools, daycare and early childhood centers, medical clinics, youth serving organizations, churches and houses of worship and community centers. We will identify community advocates who can help facilitate the dissemination and adoption of best practices of prevention and child safety. We will learn as we go and adjust, iterate, and prototype in new settings to broaden our reach across the county.
Child abuse affects children from every socioeconomic group – rich, poor and middle income and every gender, race, ethnicity, religion and community. Child abuse is an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) that can have lifelong consequences for the health and wellbeing of survivors well into adulthood. Child abuse can also have a ripple effect and generational impact resulting from the trauma of abuse.
